The project

Join our volunteer program in Tanzania and be part of empowering women through skills training initiatives. From our community hub in Arusha, you’ll work in collaboration with local community members on handcrafted projects and eco-friendly fashion practices.  Together, we aim to create employment opportunities, elevate living standards and create positive long-term change within the community.

The program

The women’s empowerment program aims to improve community lives through handicraft skills and entrepreneurship. Regardless of your expertise in marketing, business management or product development, you can make a meaningful impact as a volunteer, empowering local women through sustainable skills training.

You’ll participate in a variety of activities focused on skill development in weaving, including the ability to translate patterns from books to fabric and using hand-operated machines. Volunteers also contribute to supporting various business activities, which can expand their entrepreneurial skills.

Project activities include:

1. Crafting handcrafted items: Learn fashion, paper, bead craft, woodwork and weaving techniques while assisting local artisans.

2. Supporting business activities: Assist entrepreneurs with sales, marketing, social media, graphic and product design to boost local businesses.

3. Assisting with ad-hoc tasks: Pitch in with occasional construction projects and other tasks that support community initiatives.

4. Skills development: Continuously refine your skills through online research and apply them to project activities, fostering collaborative learning.

Your contribution

No specialised skills are required – just bring your passion for creating a lasting positive impact. Take part in various activities, like graphic design, online courses, social media management, product design, and even weaving skills. You might find yourself managing orders, planning exhibitions or getting creative with leftover fabrics. There are also opportunities in sales, marketing, web design and even occasional construction projects. Your creativity and motivation are highly valued, and work hours are flexible, tailored to your level of engagement.

Location

You’ll be based in Arusha, a vibrant town in the northern highlands of Tanzania. Arusha is a blend of old and new, making it a great place to explore. Take a stroll through the local markets for unique finds and experience the Maasai culture through their crafts and activities. And make sure to try the delicious Tanzanian food while you’re here. Arusha promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Tanzanian life, and you’re invited to soak it all in.

Typical day

Shape your workday around your interests and expertise. Begin with a morning discussion with your supervisor to plan the day’s tasks. While the main focus is on office work, you’ll have ample time to immerse yourself in traditional crafts like weaving and jewellery making.

While we’ve outlined a typical day, the schedule is flexible to suit your needs. Breakfast is at 08:00, then it’s off to the project workshop by 09:00. You’ll work on projects from 09:30 to 13:00, with a break for lunch. Formal project work ends at 15:00, but tasks may vary based on client orders. Enjoy the freedom to travel independently, making a meaningful impact while having ample time to explore.

Free time

Get ready for exciting downtime adventures! Imagine exploring hidden waterfalls and lush forests, or relaxing in hot springs with Mount Kilimanjaro views. Explore the coffee scene, understanding the bean-to-brew process at a plantation. Immerse yourself in vibrant culture with Maasai market tours. For extra thrills, go on safaris in top-notch national parks like Arusha, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Feeling extra adventurous?
